Chéticamp is a culturally rich and vibrant Acadian community located along the Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island’s northwest coast, where the south-east winds, known as les suêtes, blow strong onshore and dancing is practically second nature. For 20 years La Swing du Suête dance troupe, comprised of students at L’École NDA in Chéticamp, has been promoting and presenting Acadian Cape Breton dance here at home and across the Maritimes, in Quebec, Alberta and Louisiana. Christine Doucette is Artistic Director and handles choreography along with Sylvie Doucette, both former dancers with the troupe. Bon Débarras will bring their energetic music and dance from Quebec to this afternoon’s celebration. And Andrea, Véronique, Douglas and Lawrence, all well- versed in the Acadian and Québécois dance traditions, will provide the tunes and tempos needed for these dancers to show their steps
Chéticamp is home to a vibrant culture, rich traditions, and an abundance of music and dance. Soirées are hosted throughout the year in this community, and with Celtic Colours here, throughout the week as well, including this evening at La Place des arts Père Anselme Chiasson. Sylvia makes Chéticamp her home. Her voice is like no other and you will be soothed by her mesmerizing lyrics. Danelle and Celine are twins with parental ties to this community. Taught by Wendy MacIsaac, they’ve returned to Chéticamp for many Conseil des Arts productions over the years. Leanne Aucoin’s roots are in Chéticamp and her band The Narrows blends the Scottish-Acadian and Québécois sounds perfectly. With Acadian connections across the way in PEI, Ten Strings and a Goat Skin put a bow on the evening, connecting with interprovincial Acadian cousins.
